Best Mountain Bikes Under £500

Top 7 Best Mountain Bikes Under £500 (April 2021)

Updated - April 1, 2021

In this article we’re going to try and find the best mountain bikes under £500. Despite the name, mountain bikes are actually designed to do any kind of biking you want – it’s just that manufacturers build them with certain specialities in mind. A mountain bike is a great investment and you don’t want to just pick the cheapest option. If you are seeking a better value then stick to basic designs and materials with standard 26-inch wheels. A basic core design can still measure up to some of the higher priced models in ability and durability.

The Best Mountain Bike Frames

You can’t overlook the frame element on a mountain bike under £500. The weight and usability of the MTB very much depend on this. Most of the best entry products are made of aluminium, which is a versatile framing material and comfortable to ride with. In mid-range mountain bike, you may get a mixture of carbon and aluminium. Often the best bikes have carbon with lower components, which is next to an alloy bike. You can go for an alloy bike with mid-range and upgrade the components later. The carbon frame bikes are lighter than the aluminium and tend to be stiffer earlier.

A few years back, carbon bikes had a reputation for being fragile, but the best modern carbon mountain bikes are much stronger and durable. When it comes to looking for the right speed bike, you have a few to choose from. Most standard mountain bikes come in 21-speed, 24-speed and 27-speed. We’d definitely recommend getting a mountain bike with hydraulic disc brakes as v-type brakes aren’t so good in wet or muddy conditions.

What Type Of Mountain Bike Should You Get?

Using a mountain bike for city rides and occasional off-roading is a common choice for users. For this kind of use, having dual suspension with dual disc brakes are not a necessity. At the same time is someone is purchasing a mountain bike for serious off-roading activities having the features mentioned here becomes a necessity. This can mean a more expensive bike and will be purely down to your price point.

Hardtail Mountain Bikes Under £500

If you prefer biking on smoother trails, or enjoy taking on large hills to push your cardiovascular endurance. You’ll want to invest in a hardtail mountain bike. These single suspension bikes don’t have the shock absorption of full suspension bikes, but they’re the perfect fit for mountain biking on flatter terrain or shifting up steep slopes.

Full Suspension Mountain Bikes Under £500

Full suspension mountain bikes are must-haves for tackling tough trails, jumps, and obstacles that a hardtail can’t handle. They tend to be pricier than single suspension bikes, but having the full-suspension traction and stability for fearless, affordable mountain biking is a must if you’re serious about your off-road adventures.

A really neat looking mountain bike that radiates class. We think this bike is going to be a hit.

The Basis Harrier Hydro bats for the next level in Mountain Bike riding. Based around a T6 Hydroformed hardtail frame, offering a more aggressive stance thanks to it’s lower standover, designed to allow for in-air agility and really exaggerate maneuverability. Working in harmony with this downhill geometry you’ll find uprated SR Suntour XCT-HLO Hydro Lock-Out suspension forks, with 100mm travel you’ll confidenty glide over unforgiving terrain and make childs play of tough impact.

  • Frame: 6061 T6 Hydroformed Aluminium Crossbar – 18″/20″
  • Fork: SR Suntour  XCT-HLO, Alloy Crown, 100mm Travel, Hydraulic Lockout

Excelling on the descents, propelling on the ascents. While thriving off pace on the way down, the Harrier Hydro has no qualms in reaching the summit without breaking a sweat. We’ve combined a broad 24 speed Shimano Altus gearing system & Rapidfire+ shifters to endure the steepest, most relentless terrains so you can save your energy for the way down. Of course with aggressive velocity must come aggressive stopping power, and when it comes to high-end MTB’s we know that brakes serve much more of a purpose than simply slowing, so we’ve encorporated powerful Shimano BR-M315 Hydraulic disc brakes to aspire agility when cornering, and confidence when slowing.

A nice addition to the Basis range, the Harrier Hydro hardtail mountain bike looks the part. From the look of the specs and customer reviews, it has the performance to back it up.

An aesthetically pleasing mountain bike with some impressive equipment for the price. You don't often see internal cable management and disc brakes on a budget mountain bike.

The LEONX X1 is a very smart looking mountain bike. It has been kitted out with some very impressive components. Yet it remains massively affordable to most.

Let’s start with the bikes frame. It’s made from aluminium which keeps it nice and lightweight. It also benefits from internal cable management. By routing the cables through the frame tubes instead of along the outside of the frame they are more protected. The overall look of the frame is also improved due to the internal cable routing. The frame has some nice decals along it that match the design of the front fork and sports saddle.

The sports saddle is thin and streamlined. It has an Italian racing look and feel to it. It is comfortable and designed for long periods of use. The wheels are 27.5 inches in diameter and have chunky Kendra black tyres as standard.

The LEONX X1 is equipped with a 24 speed Shimano gearing system and performance disc brakes. Overall we’re really impressed by the layout of this bike. Some customers have noted that the bike needs some adjustments upon arrival. This is however very common and we recommend that all new bikes are checked over by someone who knows what they’re doing. If you’re not too sure then check with a local bike servicing facility.
