Top 8 Best Road Bikes Under £200 (June 2020)
Looking for the best road bikes under £200 comes with its own headaches. Road bikes can cost several thousand pounds so are you getting a good bike for less than £200? Well that’s a good question, in terms of the grand spectrum of bikes available the £200 mark is probably high in the ‘mid-tier’ range. The bikes available for this price have good features and look sleek and well designed. Another benefit of this price range is it’s quite commonly the price range used by most riders. That means reviews are easy to come by. We’ve used a combination of first hand experience and researched reviews to compile a list of road bikes under £200.
With a budget of £200 it’s possible to find a good road bike. A road bike that will hopefully last several years and need minimum maintenance due to its quality and design.
Lightweight road bikes will be our main focus with a budget of £200. £200 allows us to look at both aluminium and carbon composite bike frames. With an aluminium frame our road bikes will be much lighter than bicycles with a steel frame construction. A road bike sporting a carbon fibre frame will pack even less weight.
We only consider a bike whose price point offers great value for money, ride comfort, commuting potential and top performance when compared to other bikes within the £200 groupset.
Mechanical disc brakes are something that £200 allows us to consider. A wide range of disc brakes are available on road bikes. We’ll be looking to add some options to our recommended road bike list that have disc brakes within our budget.
Carbon fibre isn’t a deal breaker at the £200 budget. We want to choose the right disc brakes, carbon or aluminium frame and handlebars to make our cycling enjoyable all the time. Especially if you spend time long times riding on a range of different roads and race tracks. A comfortable ride and riding position are important as we do our best to stay within our price point range.
Balancing a road bikes value for money against its endurance and specialised design can make getting the road bikes specification a difficult job. You can expect the best road bikes under £200 to provide a comfortable ride. This is because they’re lighter and more durable than the lower tier ‘cheap road bike’ bikes. You can also expect the best examples to come with an aluminium frame, front full carbon fork, possibly internal cable routing and excellent riding position.
After all the latest road bikes have been designed to ride quick while maintaining comfort regardless of speed.
Alloy wheels might become affordable with some of the best cheap road cycling options around our guide price. Steel is solid but isn’t as lightweight. Full carbon fibre would be the dream however might not match out price point.
Hopefully the list below will give you some indication of the best road bikes under £200 on offer and what great value bikes you can get in your price bracket.

The Probike folding city bike is a great option for those on a tight budget. If you’re looking for a bike that doesn’t cost the earth yet offers a comfortable ride and has the customer reviews to prove it. This might be the bike for you.
As with all folding bikes, the Probike folding city bike comes with the added convenience of being easily stored when not in use. Folding the bike away is a hassle free and straight forward task that doesn’t take a long time to complete.
We’ve found a video to help you complete the final stages of configuration, straight out of the box.
The bike comes with some nice extras like the front and rear mudguards to help avoid any water or debris reaching you or your clothing. The last thing you want if you’re using the bike to get to work is to arrive with wet clothes or shoes. A rear cargo rack for carrying your luggage, no need to carry all your things on your back. It also comes with front and rear LED lights. Which is great for evening or night time commutes in and out of the city.
Although this model only comes with V brakes it’s difficult to fault the Probike as mechanical disc brakes are way outside of the budget this bike is targeting. If it were to be given mechanical disc brakes you could expect to pay far more for the bike to accommodate the additional expense. Instead the V brakes allow the price to remain low and from previous customer reviews it would seem the V brakes work perfectly fine. This isn’t a racing bike so we wouldn’t suggest riding at high speed. Folding bikes can be weaker than most conventional road bikes as they have several joining components rather than a single piece frame.
Overall we’re very impressed with the Probike folding city bike. It’s comfortable, well received by previous and current owners and above all else it’s available at a great price for those on a tight budget. Check it out.

The Critical Cycles Fixed-Gear road bike has two rare and someone unique features that are worth noting on this review. The bullhorn handlebars are an interesting design and really does remind me of bull riders. You feel like you’re riding on top of this bike which I suppose is like any other and yet it is somewhat different. The other is the low profile BMX pedals. We can’t quite put our finger on the reason why these particular pedals were decided upon however they are nice and the ridges and grooves grip to your cycling shoes nicely.
The Critical Cycles Fixed-Gear road bike comes with Wander tyres a KMC chain, Promax brakes and lightweight allow chain wheel. All in an attempt to keep this bike light and nimble.
We think as a beginners bike, it’s a great option. It has a ton of positive reviews and so we give it a huge thumbs up.
Muddyfox Road 14 Road Bike
- ✔ 14 speed shimano gearing
- ✔ Alloy brake levers and callipers
- ✔ Hi-tensile lightweight steel frame
- ✔ Road style saddle
During this Muddyfox Road 14 road bike review the bike will be put through it’s paces and evaluated on several key areas. The Muddyfox Road 14 is an entry level road bike. The bike is a good option for those who are looking for a beginner road bike.
The Muddyfox Road 14 road bike has a simple design however uses quite impressive components offering the rider a solid performance for a very competitive price. The road bikes 56cm frame is made from hi-tensile lightweight steel coloured mainly in white. The bikes front fork is a dark blue colour. The bike has drop styled handlebars that are adjustable allowing the rider to configure them to a specific height. The handlebars are home to the 14 speed Shimano gear shifters and the alloy brake levers. The Muddyfox Road 14 road bike comes with 700c double walled rims and 28c road tyres. The bike has standard black plastic road bike pedals included with the bike & has an adjustable sports saddle offering a comfortable ride for those long distance bike rides.
The Muddyfox Road 14 road bike comes with from and back calliper brakes that give a good response when used. The bike stops quickly and safely as expected without the brake levers being overly sensitive. The Brake pads are easily changed and require minor configuration upon receiving the bike.
The Muddyfox Road 14 road bike comes with 28c road tyres. These tyres offer a smooth tread that allows the bike to cut through the air and minimise drag on the road. Despite the bikes low Muddyfox Road 14 is still able to grip the road quite well for those moments when you need to turn direction or suddenly brake. Overall the tyres seems strong and durable so should last a significant amount of time as long as they avoid damage or punctures.
The Muddyfox Road 14 road bike has very little in terms of suspension or cushioned ride comfort. You feel the road quite well through the handlebars and saddle. This give the rider a sporty feel for the bike and despite a bumpy road causing ride comfort to drop, if the road is smooth then the bike rides really well.
What a great example of how you can purchase a brand new road bike for very little money. This bike has some great components and offers a really comfortable ride for very little financial commitment. The bikes style is easy on the eye and everything from the saddle to the pedals and handlebars is designed with rider comfort in mind. A really good entry level road bike.

The included pannier rack makes your commute that bit easier, just attach your pannier bag and away you go!
Another Ammaco bike for our ever growing collection. Not many bike providers cover so many budgets. The Madrid city bike is one of their low cost bikes, allowing individuals with a lower budget to still get hold of a decent bike that’s solid enough to get your to and from work or the shops when needed.
Although this price range doesn’t allow for aluminium bikes you can rest assured that even Ammaco’s steel bike frames aren’t particularly heavy weighing in at 15.9Kg. The Madrid has a comfy padded seat, responsive V brakes and 7 speed thumb shifters.
Some additional luxuries that make it a city bike include the rear storage rack. You’re able to carry your bag or coat on the rear of the Ammaco Madrid rather than having to wear them. Over long journeys when the suns out in the day, yet you need your coat for the evening ride, it can be annoying having to wear your coat. The storage rack means you don’t have to.
The Madrid also comes with a kickstand which is great for when you’ve come to a stop and want to rest the bike so you can do whatever else is the priority at the time. Gone are the days of checking your phone while balancing your bike between your legs or resting it up against a nearby wall. Kick out the kickstand and you’re good to focus on something else.
The front and rear mudguards are a particular favourite with our team here. Many ride to work regardless of the weather (within reason). You can always tell who has and more importantly who hasn’t got mudguards. If it’s raining outside you can be sure that certain members of the team will arrive looking like they’ve taken a detour through a shallow river. Yep, we like mudguards.
Overall, this bike deserves to be on our list due to it’s value for money. Many will advise you to spend more on a city bike, especially if it’s for work rather than a hobby or pastime. If that’s not an option for you then you certainly should consider the Ammaco Madrid city bike.

What's the best road bike I can get for £200?
If your budget is £200 then you’re in the right place. This list contains all bikes that we recommend after researching countless sources, reviews and articles. We only put the bikes that we feel ‘make the cut’ into our review lists so you can be sure you’re looking at some great options if you’re in the market to buy.
What are the best road bikes for the money?
This is a very difficult question, simply because ‘for the money’ could mean any price range. We’ve done our best to split the price ranges into individual pages filled with the road bikes that we think are the best options on the market right now. We update these lists regularly and do our best to make sure we only provide reviews for bikes that are readily available.
What are the best road bikes for beginners?
Beginners are sometimes inclined to get the cheapest option available to them. After all, they’re not sure this is something they will continue or even enjoy in the first place. Our most appropriate advise in this situation is that although investing huge amounts is not advisable, if you were to get the cheapest bike on the market it may cause your experience to be worse than if you were to get a well reviewed ‘beginners’ model reviewed by those that know the industry well. We’d highly recommend you take a look at some of our cheaper price road bike review lists before making a decision on what to choose. That way at least you know that the bike you choose is good enough that is has at least made it onto our list. We update these lists regularly so you can be sure you’ll find the best bikes on the market within these lists.
Are cheap road bikes any good?
The definition if cheap is important in this answer. If by cheap we simply mean the the road bike doesn’t cost a huge sum of money, then it is possible that this bike could still be quite good. Although if the bike isn’t costing you that much and the seller is to make a profit, the components must be collectively cheaper than the price you pay for the item. If however the definition of cheap is directly aimed at the component and materials used then more often than not a cheap road bike is not a good investment. We recommend viewing our ‘Best Road Bike’ product reviews for every budget to make sure you find a bike that is less ‘cheap’ and more of a ‘bargain’.
What is a good price for a road bike?
Road bikes much like cars, come in all sorts of models, designs and finishes. Many have technological and engineering adaptations that can add hundreds if not thousands of pounds to the price tag. A good price for a road bike is one that falls within your budget yet provides you with a bike that is better than all the others also within your budget. A vague answer I know, but as specific as can be for the question at hand. We only put road bikes on our review lists that we feel are good enough to be deemed the best in their market. Take a look one of our road bike review lists that suits your budget.
