Things To Consider

What To Expect

With road bikes less than £200 you’re likely to expect machines that have avoided high performance components such as racing tyres. Racing tyres aren’t a must have for casual riders as standard road bike tyres are good enough for everyday road use. If you’re commuting to work on a budget then the bikes listed above are certainly worth considering.

Quality Components

When looking for a road bike under £200 you need to be realistic. Every bike on this list are good enough for the casual or beginner rider and come with everything you need to get you started. Most come with Shimano gear mechanics and calliper brakes that will easily do the job. However over time you may want to upgrade these components. This way you don’t need a huge budget to start with and can instead invest in your bike over a period of time. If you’re interested in higher quality components them maybe our review on best road bikes under £300 or best road bikes under £500 would be of interest to you.

Common Features

Common features of the best road bikes under £200 are flat handlebars. Flat handlebars are the most common type of handlebars and are only superseded by dropped handlebars on more racing styled road bikes. Another common feature is unbranded tyres. This isn’t necessarily a negative however owners usually have more confidence in branded components. This is an effort to keep the price of the bikes down and is a compromise that is almost unavoidable in this price range.

Look And Feel

Just because the road bike budget is low doesn’t mean the style or design of the bike is poor. In fact we have several really impressive looking road bikes in this list. Road bikes can be found in all different colours and styles even in the below £200 range. We’ve made sure to include some of our recommended bikes that diverge from the usual black and white styles seen commonly in road bikes today.

Worth It?

Only time will tell. When you buy a road bike for less than £200 you have to consider what calibre of components were used in it’s creation. They may work for a year or 10 years before you need to tweak or change them however with such a low initial investment perhaps this is to be expected. If you’re plan is to invest in higher quality components over the coming months and years then this shouldn’t be as much of a problem. Unless you have a magic eight ball it’s difficult to accurately measure the expected lifespan of these beginner road bikes.
